A Look at Alcohols...
A question I got from a SoVAiN customer:
Are all alcohols drying?
As a general rule, I tell my clients to stay away from alcohols due to their tendency to dry our already dry hair; HOWEVER, there are alcohols on the market that are complete misnomers. These alcohols are actually moisturizing....I know...I know...*screwface.* Trust me on this. All alcohols are not created equally.
Here's a list of the 'okay' or 'fatty' alcohols:
Fatty alcohols provide an emollient effect, and bind water and oil to give our favorite conditioners their slip and creaminess.
My favorite alcohol is cetyl alcohol, which is found in most of the SoVAiN products:
*Cetyl Alcohol- This is a fatty alcohol that is derived from coconut and palm oils. Far from drying, this alcohol is actually an emollient (makes hair and skin softer).
Which alcohols should I avoid?
Short chain alcohols-- SD alcohol, SD alcohol 40, Alcohol denat, Propanol, Propyl alcohol and Isopropyl alcohol.
So there you have it. Being an ingredient snob can be confusing....especially when there are products out there with a mixture of good and bad ingredients and you can't tell which is which just by the name. At SoVAiN, we strive to provide you with the only the highest quality ingredients for your hair and only add those ingredients which will actually IMPROVE the quality of your hair rather than act as a product "filler."
Keep the questions coming! I love the discourse and the enthusiasm!
