-Be sure to check the ingredients on your hair products. The ingredients that you should avoid are: sulfate, alcohol, mineral oil, petroleum, and parabens. If your hair products contain any of these, you should stop using it asap!

-Petroleum and mineral oil clog your pores. They also cause dryness on the scalp, making it unable to absorb moisture and your hair will be prone to additional damage. If your moisturizer contains mineral oil or petroleum, switch to one without these ingredients. The moisture must get to the cortex, the source of dry hair. Mineral oil and petroleum only lie on the surface of the hair and prevent moisture from penetrating.

-Shampoo (or co-wash) and deep condition your hair at least once a week with a moisturizing conditioner. Our hair is naturally dry and needs regular moisture in order to prevent breakage, shrinkage, and allow for a neater curl pattern. If your hair is excessively dry you should deep conditioner twice a week until the hair's moisture levels are restored to a normal level.

-Moisturize and seal hair daily when wearing a curly style. The curlier our hair the drier it becomes. Use a leave in conditioner such as SoVAiN Hair Dew Leave in Conditioner to revitalize your curls. Follow with SoVAiN Hair Like Silk to seal in the moisture.

-Always use a seamless comb. Combs with seams cause mid-shaft splits, excessive hair loss, and breakage. #nobueno

-Use an old t-shirt to dry your hair. The soft t-shirt material will minimize disruption of the hair's cuticle preventing breakage and frizz.

-Use a protein conditioner at least monthly for healthy hair. Hair that suffers from excessive breakage should use a protein conditioner more often (weekly) and follow with the moisturizing conditioner. SoVAiN Protein Repair Conditioner can be used weekly when followed with SoVAiN Deep Moisture Repair Conditioner.

-For hair that suffers from extreme dryness, prepoo the hair with our SoVAiN Hair Like Silk. Apply a liberal amount of Hair Like Silk to your head and cover with a plastic cap. Leave on for 30-45 minutes. Shampoo or co-wash as normal.

-The signs of damaged hair are: a lack of shine, split or frizzy ends, dryness and excessive breakage. A good conditioner can help correct these problems.

-Stay away from products that contain too many filler chemicals. These chemicals do nothing for your hair and are often carcinogenic.

-Hair steamers offer the best way to deep condition hair. Alternatively, use a hooded dryer with a plastic cap to open the cuticles of your hair to allow the oils to penetrate the hair shaft and condition the hair.

-Steer clear of products containing lanolin and beeswax. These ingredients, while natural, are natural irritants and can clog pores and cause build up on hair. If you suffer from dermatitis or eczema, products with these ingredients can cause an itchy, scratchy flare up.

-Protect hair at night with a silk pillow case or silk bonnet.

-NEVER brush your hair with a bristled brush. This causes millions of tiny tears on the cuticle and causes hair to shed prematurely.

-Wigs are generally better alternatives to weaves for protective styling. Wigs allow you to take care of the hair underneath on a more consistent basis.

-There is no need to trim your hair every 6 weeks. If you moisturize and seal regularly, limit heat usage, and condition hair weekly then you can go 5-6 months in between trims.
